Filomina Steady has spent a lifetime at the intersection of gender, culture, and global justice. Born into what she calls a "global family," she went on to become a leading voice for women’s rights and the African Diaspora, shaping policy and progress on both sides of the Atlantic. An Oxford-educated scholar and Professor Emerita of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, Steady has taught across the U.S. and in Sierra Leone, and served as Deputy Director of the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women. As a special advisor to multiple UN agencies — including the landmark Earth Summit in Rio (1992) — she has helped draft four global plans of action for gender equality.
